three | drie | tre

I have a certain affinity with the number three. Perhaps because of its shape, with those three ends, each seemingly choosing its own direction. But I also find three an interesting number in photography.

It is sometimes said that an odd number of objects makes a photograph more interesting. I can relate to that. Three trees, for example, already offer a surprising number of possibilities. By changing their relative positions, the distance between them and my own viewpoint, I can give the composition a completely different character. One tree becomes the main subject, while the other two provide balance. Or perhaps they don’t.

With just three objects, you can create a photograph that feels balanced, but you can just as easily create an image that is deliberately off-balance.

Perhaps that is what appeals to me most about three: with very little, it creates a surprisingly wide space for the imagination.

Oppure no.
