Axel, 21-22.09.2025

When I’m in Axel (“at home”), I love walking along the creek. The stretch between the small creek and the large one, and the large creek heading toward Sassing. It’s exactly there that the “old” Zeeuws-Vlaanderen ends and the “new” Zeeuws-Vlaanderen begins.

When I look to my left, I see the trees, the water, birds swimming their lanes or flying overhead, anglers along the bank. When I look to my right, I see greenhouses, wind turbines, plumes of smoke rising above industrial complexes.

You can’t stop progress, but at the same time you have to keep searching for balance in a landscape with a past.

Als ik in Axel ben (‘thuis’) loop ik graag langs de kreek. Het stukje tussen de kleine en de grote kreek, de grote kreek richting Sassing. Het is precies daar dat het ‘oude’ Zeeuws Vlaanderen ophoudt, en het ‘nieuwe Zeeuws Vlaanderen’ begint.

Kijk ik naar links dan zie ik de bomen, het water, vogels die een baantje trekken of overvliegen, vissers. Kijk ik naar rechts dan zie ik de kassen, windturbines, rookpluimen boven industriële complexen.

Je kunt vooruitgang niet tegenhouden, maar tegelijkertijd moet je blijven zoeken naar evenwicht in een landschap dat een verleden heeft.

Quando sono ad Axel (“a casa”), mi piace camminare lungo l’insenatura. Quel tratto che collega la piccola alla grande insenatura, e poi la grande insenatura che si allunga verso Sassing. È proprio lì che la “vecchia” Zelanda Fiamminga (Zeeuws Vlaanderen) sembra finire e lasciare il posto a quella “nuova”.

Se guardo a sinistra, vedo gli alberi, l’acqua tranquilla, gli uccelli che nuotano o attraversano il cielo, i pescatori fermi sulla riva. Se guardo a destra, invece, appaiono le serre, le turbine eoliche, le colonne di fumo che salgono dai complessi industriali.

Il progresso non si può fermare, ma bisogna continuare a cercare un equilibrio in un paesaggio che porta con sé una storia.
