Yes, I don’t spare myself when I take a self-portrait. I don’t make anything look better than it is. I think that’s just part of my character. And that’s how I am as a hobby photographer.

No one needs to smile for me in a photo – least of all myself.

“A face with character,” people say. People enjoy looking at a face with character, just not when it’s their own.

“I look old in the photo,” an acquaintance told me recently. “Not just in the photo,” I replied.

I prefer to photograph people as they are. But that’s exactly what people often don’t want.

Life is a stage, says a Dutch proverb. It’s a slightly embellished version of a line from William Shakespeare’s comedy As You Like It.

As You Like It, Act II, Scene VII:

,,All the world’s a stage,

And all the men and women merely players;

They have their exits and their entrances,

And one man in his time plays many parts…’’

Ja, ik spaar mezelf niet als ik een zelfportret maak. Ik maak niks mooier dan dat het is. Dat is, denk ik, een karaktertrek van me. En dat is hoe ik als hobbyfotograaf ben.

Niemand hoeft voor mij te glimlachen op een foto, en ikzelf al helemaal niet.

Een karakterkop, zeggen ze dan. De mensen kijken graag naar een karakterkop, maar niet als die van hun zelf is.

,,Ik ben oud op de foto’’, zei een kennis me een tijdje geleden. ,,Niet alleen op de foto’’, antwoordde ik hem.

Ik fotografeer de mensen het liefst zoals ze zijn. Maar dat is nou juist wat de mensen vaak niet willen.

Het leven is een schouwtoneel, zegt een Nederlands spreekwoord. Het komt, wat aangedikt, uit William Shakespeare’s komedie “As you like it”.

As You Like It, Act II, Scene VII:

,,De hele wereld is een toneel,

En alle mannen en vrouwen zijn slechts spelers;

Ze hebben hun uitgangen en hun ingangen,

En één man speelt in zijn tijd vele rollen…’’

Sì, non mi risparmio quando faccio un autoritratto. Non abbellisco nulla. Penso che sia un tratto del mio carattere. Ed è così che sono, come fotografo amatoriale.

Nessuno deve sorridere per me in una foto, tantomeno io stesso.

“Un volto con carattere”, si dice. Alla gente piace guardare un volto con carattere, ma non quando è il proprio.

“Sembro vecchio nella foto”, mi ha detto un conoscente qualche tempo fa. “Non solo nella foto”, gli ho risposto.

Preferisco fotografare le persone così come sono. Ma è proprio questo che spesso non vogliono.

La vita è una rappresentazione teatrale, dice un proverbio olandese. È una versione un po’ accentuata di una frase della commedia “As You Like It” di William Shakespeare.

As You Like It, Act II, Scene VII:
