fotografia europea – being twenty | avere vent’anni

Being Twenty. That’s the theme of Fotografia Europea, the photography festival in Reggio Emilia, which is being held for the twentieth time this year.

As I look at the work of the nine international photographers exhibiting at the Chiostri di San Pietro, I wonder whether it’s possible to turn the clock back 44 years and reflect the twenty-year-old I once was in the twenty-year-olds of today.

The answer turns out to be yes — and that does surprise me.

We didn’t have a climate crisis, but war has never disappeared from the world. Oppression, apartheid in all its forms — they have always existed. The difference is that we lacked the technological means to make everything as visible and as immediate as it is today.

Photography played a major role in my time, and that role has only grown.

Fotografia Europea – Being Twenty (I only visited the part of the festival at the Chiostri di San Pietro) tells stories. And here, the role of photography has changed: it has partly taken over the narrative function traditionally held by written journalism.

Avere vent’anni. È questo il tema di Fotografia Europea, il festival di fotografia a Reggio Emilia che quest’anno si svolge per la ventesima volta.

Guardando il lavoro dei nove fotografi internazionali esposti ai Chiostri di San Pietro, mi chiedo se sia possibile riportare indietro l’orologio di 44 anni e rispecchiare la ventenne che ero allora nei ventenni di oggi.

La risposta è sì — e la cosa mi sorprende.

Non c’era una crisi climatica, ma le guerre non hanno mai lasciato il mondo. Oppressione, apartheid nelle forme più diverse — sono sempre esistite. Ciò che mancava erano i mezzi tecnologici per rendere tutto visibile con la stessa immediatezza e nella stessa misura di oggi.

La fotografia aveva un ruolo importante ai miei tempi, e questo ruolo non ha fatto che crescere.

Fotografia Europea – Avere vent’anni (ho visitato solo la parte del festival ai Chiostri di San Pietro) racconta storie. E qui il ruolo della fotografia è cambiato: ha in parte assunto la funzione narrativa che un tempo apparteneva al giornalismo scritto.

Twintig zijn. Dat is het tema van Fotografia Europea, het fotofestival in Reggio Emilia dat dit jaar voor de twintigste keer georganiseerd wordt.

Het werk van de negen, in de Chiosco di San Pietro poserende internationale fotografen bekijkend, vraag ik me af of het mogelijk is de klok 44 jaar terug te draaien en de 20-jarige die ik toen was te spiegelen in de 20-jarigen van vandaag.

Het antwoord blijkt ,,ja’’, en dat verrast me toch wel.

We hadden geen klimaatcrisis, maar de oorlogen zijn nooit de wereld uit geweest. Onderdrukking, apartheid in de meest verschillende vormen, onderdrukking, ze hebben altijd bestaan. Alleen ontbraken de technische middelen om alles in dezelfde mate en met eenzelfde actualiteit zichtbaar te kunnen maken als nu.

De rol van de fotografie was groot in mijn tijd, en die rol is enkel groter geworden.

Fotografie Europa, Being Twenty (ik heb enkel het gedeelte van het festival in de Chiosco di San Pietro gezien) vertelt. En hier is de rol van de fotografie veranderd: de fotografie heeft de naratieve rol gedeeltelijk van de klassieke geschreven journalistiek overgenomen.
